Dwan's method works. I raised the price 10% and offered the discount and 9 out of 10 paid to get the discount. I asked the tenth company why they passed on the discount and they told me they pay on X day of the month, period My offer was out of their pay period, they lost a substantial discount for being hard-headed. Put it to the test, it works.

Early pay discounts work for some sometimes but there are always exceptions to the rule. In my experience, the larger the company the more likely they are to take the discount and abuse the time period. Point in fact, Aggregate Industries headquartered out of Maryland ( I am in Michigan) took my 2% discount but NEVER paid within the 30 days I offered the discount. Some of their payments were over 90 days late still taking the discount. I complained and they now don't take the 2% but I have over $24K over 90 days late and some invoces at 6 months old. I did over $100K with them this year so I won't rock the boat so much to loose a customer but just try and collect interest from a large company like that who takes advantage of the small guys! These ore ones that you just have to budget in the late payments (bid higher to cover the cost of money). It is unfortuante because the local office I work for has no control over speed of payment after they have approved invoices and sent them off to the corporate office.
RandyV is right The bigger the co the less they play by the rules. That is why I listed the $3000 job for Kruger finaly costing them over 14K. Same as RandyV "Budget for the late payment" I have learned to play by there rules but at my benifit. You do have to pay for an education but how much you pay is determaned by how fast you learn.
I do work for an international company headquartered in Delaware, they are 90 days pay AFTER THE CORRECT INVOICE HAS BEEN RECEIVED. You must have certain items listed and worded or they will not accept your invoice. They do spell out how to invoice in the terms you sign....so it's on you if it's done wrong. in-line; do you add anything to your invoice, a line item or a hidden charge for the extra paperwork? Or do you just write it off as a cost of doing business? Our city requires a lot of extra paperwork on a job. Enough that sometimes it takes longer to do the paperwork then it does to do the job. Wouldn't it be fair to get paid for the time required to do the extra work.
