I have the opportunity to pick up a road painting contract for a large residential upscale community. Not all lines will be painted at once, but on a rotating basis. I do not want to buy a road lazer or road machine. Will a 5900 or a 200HS do a good job? Which one would be reccommended? There are approximately 30 miles of lines total.

I painted several miles of edge lines and center lines for a couple of resorts and used a graco 3900. The most I painted was 6 miles in a day and a half but the 3900 worked fine. You should also look at a line driver and a 15 gallon hopper.

IMO the Road lazer will be some what of an over kill unless you have more work for it. The 5900 or better yet the 200HS with line driver will work great since you will not paint it all at once.

The Linelazer 4 has a rear gun mount at the base of the handlebars which will allow you to mount the guns on or near the rear axle. This allows you to stripe with all the benefits of the rear axle while still using bead dispensers. Visibility is also much better as you can now see the starts and stops with less obstructions. Either one is fine. I would base your decision on Four things: How much of these high volume jobs do you do? Is you business growing in this direction? Evaluate the difference in price, for a few hundred dollars more you go from 1.6 to 2.0 GPM pumps. Do you currently walk or do you drive? If you walk and plan to continue, the 200HS is roughly 40 pounds heavier. A friend has a traded in Road Laser that has been thoroughly gone over that he would sell for low teens (not sure exactly).

The 3900 will do it. The advantage of using the 5900 is that you can go faster, and the 200HS, faster still. I painted a couple miles of double yellow with a 3900 and had to go about 1.5mph in order to get enough paint on the pavement. I upgraded soon after. So, it's just a matter of how much you want to spend, and how fast you want to go. By all means, use the 15 gallon hopper so you won't have to stop as often. And having a LineDriver or LazyLiner will help the appearance of the lines. They will be straighter and the curves will be smoother if you have a rider. Get a long pointer or better yet, a green laser to guide you.
