Yes, they work good, I got me two. I went to the hospital a couple of years ago because of the heat, it was the worst $1000 I ever spent, don't ever want to do that again.

I'm going to order two also. That Louisiana heat had me all screwed up last year. I didn't go to the hospital but should have. I think every muscell in my body went into spasms.

Quoting Rock, July 13, 2005 (that post is not in this thread):

Not sure if it is the same thing but I use the one that slides over the top and has handles on the side. You just have to keep picking it up and slamming it down. Is that the same thing you are talking about? Thanks No, it is not the same thing you are talking about. I'll put a couple pics in my gallery sometime this weekend. It is a heavy casting that fits over 2 & 3 pound channel post, then you drive them with a heavy sledge hammer. There are two different sizes available, the bigger heavier casting that does not have open sides is best in my opinion. I cannot imagine using it for driving posts, but for driving stubs it is great, and it would be tedious on any quantity of course. I install stubs, 3-3.5 foot piece of channel driven in so that no more than 18" sticks out of the ground, then I mount the posts to the stubs. I use the driver cap if there are not too many and a use the Rhino if there are more than I care to drive with the cap. Check the photo gallery for pics of the cap, they'll be there soon if they aren't right away.

Here i what we use to drive 8,10,12 foot posts. It works great, not as fast as a Rhino. But you can use your air compressor off your sealcoating trailer or and 5 horse gas air compressor. We have had this for over two years now and have paid for its self three or four times already. For under 1000.00 you can have an automatic driver. If you want more details let me know. http://www.rohrermfg.com/99e-m_driver.cfm Jim

Jim - many thanks for posting that. I ran across it a while back and forgot to bookmark it. Didn't really want to buy a Rhino and have to rent a compressor every time I want to set 5 posts.

It works great, not as fast as a Rhino but gets the job done. We set 10 post is about 15 minutes in rocky dirt. Its not that great for splices but still works. You need to get an insert to do splices. For the price you cant beat it. JIm

If you run into conflicts with underground utilities, and you don't want to hand dig a hole, there are a few air excavation tools on the market. Just google "air excavation". The one we use requires about 100 psi @ 70cfm. They work pretty well except iin real hard or rocky ground.

Many thanks to Jim [jpanz] on suggesting the Rohrer driver. Like he said it is not as fast as a Rhino or as fast as a hydraulic driver but it is certainly better than using a hand driver. I bought a Rohrer a while back and I have had the opportunity to try it out in various soils driving galvanized #3 "U" channel. It is probably not faster than using a hand driver but it certainly is easier. Today I drove two #3 posts 3.5' into hard clay. I thought the Rhorer was not driving fast enough so I got out the hand driver and found that with each hit of the hand driver, the post moved about the same as the pneumatic Rohrer did with each hit. Needless to say, I put the pneumatic driver back on and let it do the work. What a great little tool - the plus is the low air consumption which can be delivered with a 5hp builders compressor.

that's exactly what Ken |(stripes///) !!! needs went to watch Ken on a job in Dallas and I spent the entire time in his truck with me face stuck to the airconditioner drinking copious amounts of water how does the man do it. Thank god the mans quicker than Jessy James with a stripers gun!

Wend, you never get used to it. We can sweat a gallon in less then an hour, that's why Ken keeps that big water tank on the back of the truck.
