A local contractor is giving up his bid for a Wal MArt and is offering it to me.( he lost his whole crew in a week ) Signs, striping, bollards, road entry etc. I have done little Wal Mart work and this is three times larger than my biggest job ever. Any advice, comments, or help? Accur8

Not sure what your saying here. He's giving you the chance to bid on it? He has the contract and can no longer do the work and is hiring you as his subcontractor? Who is going to pay you and what are there payment terms? Invoicing address? Contact person and phone # if you have a specific question about the job. When can work begin? Be carefull with this one. Yes this is the biggest job ever for you and you are excited about it but it also means its potentially a financial disaster waiting to happen. GET A WRITTEN AND SIGNED CONTRACT with a total $ amount for the job and when its due.

Yeah, be careful. Don't just take his contract, do the work, and bill the work yourself. The contract is not with your company. If he is going to bill it, get him to sign a contract from you. If he lost his crew, does that mean he is going out of business? The only time I got burned was with a company that got paid and promptly went out of business. The bastages kept my money. As far as the work goes, its just a bigger job. It may be scary, but just put paint to pavement and you'll be done in no time.

This job has a lot of potential....to bankrupt you. If he still holds the contract, you need to get an IRONCLAD payment agreement, with a personal guarantee of payment. Remember if he decides to go bankrupt, you get left holding the bag. Proceed with caution.

We have striped new super Wal-Marts without a contract but only for paving contractors who use us all of the time. In other words, our customer was a long-time repeat customer. I have also taken over the completion of a Wal-Mart conversion when the low bidding striper was kicked off the job, and again, it was through a paving contractor I had a good relationship with so payment was no concern. Your situation is quite a bit different and I think we all see a huge red flag going up. Proceed with great caution and make certian that you take every precaution to ensure you have legal claim to payment and the means to collect it before it is sucked up into a failing company.

Contact the GC. If the other striper is defaulting, the GC will have to get someone else to stripe the job. Bid it directly to them.

A little more detail may help, Yes, the striper does want to sub the job to me. As we spoke more, it includes all signs, bollards, posts, removing and replacing road striping (center line, fog line, turn arrows etc....) This striper does have a history with Wal Mart. His name is XX XXXX out of Boise Id., and yes the dollar sum could bank rupt some one, or at least sting alot. ACCUR8

Have them put the money in escrow before you start. or at least front the money for materials.

If you are adding roads , check spec for type of paint ,it may differ from youre lot paint, and think about t-controll on the road. good luck

The last road ingres/egress I did I used DOT paint with glass bead, filed a plan with the DOT, and had hired traffic control. The state DOT even provided an engineer to supervise at no charge. The good thing is our state still allows oil paint on roads with a $1.00 per gallon surcharge. ACCUR8
