I have a JCL hrl1 cleaned and rebuilt everything this winter . went out today to do some stencils with the hand gun, when i was spraying it acted like it was out of paint, sputter, paint, sputter, paint , any ideas would be appreciated.

I put a chuck on the hose on my air machine and use it to air up tires. Sorry... no other ideas.

Time to replace the paint hose, or fill it with toluene and let it sit for 24 hours before flushing it. Or it could be: paint in the tank pickup tube, or maybe clogged inline filter?

I had the same problem, until I started straining the paint, even unopen buckets. Never had a problem since.

If the front gun sprays lines ok, then the problem is the line to the hand gun or the gun itself. Check for kinks in the hose also. Maybe the shut-off valve to the hand gun is funky also.

I am sure if you follow the advice of the other posters you should be back in business. However, one last tip. If you haven't used the striping gun or it shows the same systems as the stencil gun, check the intake pipe going into the paint pot. If it was not tightened after cleaning, air could be getting into the material line instead of paint causing the symptoms you mentioned. This is the last possible cause and very unlikely but a possibility.

Just curious if you tried the line gun? If it acts the same you obviously have something in common from the source and not the individual gun or line. Did you change your paint supplier? I tried to paint with some quickset and got the results you are talking about. If you don't find anything plugged up try thinning your paint a little.

I do strain the paint and i did change over to ennis but do not like it, it seems way to thick. i'm going to try cleaning the hose the ennis paint did sit in the machine for about 5 days but was under pressure and i've had paint sit for over a week befor with no problems but it was SW. going to finish the morning coffee and start disecting it , thanks for all the tips i'll let you know what i find

"way to thick" and "sitting for 5 days" combined will be you problem. The draw tube on your tank is likely about 1/4" or less from the bottom. It takes very little paint settling to restrict or plug that tube. Also if you are using a pot liner somethimes they can suck up to the tube and block the flow. Pot liners are like a buck $ and save alot of cleaning time if they don't present a preblem.

Is the paint Waterborne, to be more specific fast dry waterborne (1952-D). If you take the air cap off and shut off the atomizing air to the gun do you get acceptable flow (pee stream). Is the filter under the tank clean? A couple of other things come to mind. If you stored it with solvent and merely added waterborne paint, you could have a material to material compatibility issue (goobers, cottage cheese, junk) in the lines, filters, or guns. If it is a fast dry waterborne you may have a reaction sitting in the tank that may have closed a fitting. I really do not think leaving material under pressure in the system does a heck of a lot of good or bad. Probably is not required. Since it is the first time you used it, I would think some partial blockage in the system like the gun inlet or plumbing under the tank.
