especially if the lines are faint and you're doing 2 coats. 1. Chalk all the curbs where the lines go. 2. Put 3 layers of tape at the end of the 1st and last stripe in each row. 3. Draw a diagram. Many people are probably saying DA but there were several times before I learned these tricks that we had a hard time seeing the lines after sealcoating. One time after the previous sealcoat job they changed the pattern and we striped the 1st pattern.

Good idea. When you look at a lot that has been sealed, but not striped yet, you can usually see where the old lines were because the paint has protected the asphalt and the stripes will be higher that the unpainted asphalt. If the lot was not sealed for some time after it was striped, then the old lines were blacked out, or the lot was sealed, and the layout was changed, the original lines will show up through the sealer, and the new ones will not.
i have heard that before but flat out forgot that trick....i like it, this weekend did some big work (sealed) and when went to stripe it was fairly hard to see the old lines, most of the time i have no problem but this job had quite wore out stripes and found them without having to layout, but that trick would of saved a bit of time.....and i will see if i can get some of that negative karma off koter...not to bring up the karma issue but u are another one that i just dont see how u have negative karma
Speaking of tape, if the old lines are faint or crooked you can just take some duct tape, tear it down the middle (no need for full width) and tear little strips. "Pinch" the tape in the middle to create a little tab and place on the same corner of the stripe you marked the curb on or if it's a bank with no curbs just make sure they are all done the same. When you are through sealing you'll have a bunch of little "tabs" sticking up that are easy to grab and when you pull them up you can see a little piece of the side of the stripe for your chalk line...
The tape works great if your doing the sealing but if you just do the stripes and can't look at it before hand you need to make the sealer guys get you a sketch and it may take a few times of them having to pay more then normal to get them to learn that you don't read minds or do remote viewing.
