If I wish to drill an occasional hole in asphalt, for handicap sign post installation, do they make a proper core bit for an SDS or SDS+ hammer drill? (probably 3" diameter X 6" deep)

I have a sds max hilti core bit. its 4 inches in diameter and works well with the 2# u channel posts. more than good enough for occasional use, id guess my bit has a 100 holes or more on it and works as good as new. I found it used on ebay for 100 bux. retail im guessing is 3-400 range.

Dry or wet bit?

It would be dry for a hand drill.

dry bit. I just saw you said sds or sds+. the drill I use is a bosch 11240, 10 amp drill. its sds max. if you look around you can find used ones for a couple hundred bux.

I use a 3 inch core drill bit on SDS rotary Milwaukee - I am not sure, but it is actually 2 pieces with a drill bit in the center of the core. Works awesome and is a dry drill. I use a generator or plugs if they have them on site. Believe I paid close to 300$ just for the bit. It is high quality and worth the investment if you install wheel stops or signage.

I just switched to the SDS MAx. I have a Hilti core drill on a stand with the vacuum attachement that I want to sell. Email me for pictures. linepainternj at g mail dot com
