I have a graco 3900 II that has run great from day one until now.The engine surges. It just about stalls out and then the rpm's shoot up then back down again. It's driving me crazy.I have tried adjusting everything on it and dont know how to stop this. Can anyone help?

first, check to make sure the idler tension spring (at least that's what I call it) is there and connected at both ends. It is the fine wired spring that the governor linkage goes through. If it is there and connected, try a simple disassembly, cleaning and reassembly of the carb. If that does not work, a replacement carb is cheap - buy a new one off e-bay - better yet, buy two and keep a spare.

Try running two tanks of gas with a good carb cleaner mixed in...something like Techron.

Water cannon sells replacement carbs for almost free.

The same thing happened to mine some time ago. Was the low oil sensor unit going bad. Might try un pluging it to see if it helps. Mine is still unpluged as the engine case has to be split to replace, or so i'm told. Milt

pull the plug wire or ground it out with an insulated screwdriver

Wendy, There are a couple of male/female connectors in the wiring next to the motor's on/off switch. Make sure they are all plugged together. All the switch wiring does is to provide a way to short the magneto to ground. These connectors also place the oil sensor switch in the same loop allowing it to short the mag to ground if the oil gets too low. Without a path to ground provided, the motor will keep running. I'm looking for "Little Stripes" to get out of town. I expect you and Donna to crack the whip!!!

Kris, soak that old carb in some MEK and get the rebuild kit and you will have a spare.

OK so here we go again. My lazy liner has the 11 horse motor on it and is running terrible it spits and sputters as soon as you push the petal to move forward or backward all kinds of soot is around the exhaust area. I assume its running too rich but there is no adjustment for that. Got any ideas on how to fix this?

Kris, start it up with out the air filter, if it runs better then it needs a new one, chances are that it's running too rich because the filter is dirty. You will also need a new spark plug. The Honda has no adjustments other then idle speed.

We just went thru the same thing. Unscrew the float bowl. Turn the carb over and unscrew the brass jet located in the very center of the carb. You will need a long narrow screw driver because it is inside a tube. When you get it out, chances are it is stopped up with a grain of sand or debris. This may be all that is wrong with your old carb. This fixed our problem.

Straightline wins. I took the air filter off and put in a new plug. Back in business baby! I cleaned the filter and put it back on until the new one comes. As for the other one on the 3900 I checked the jet and it looks good so I'll just rebuild it this winter. No time for that right now. just landed a big job I've been trying to get for quite a while. Ever have a flu shot? It probably came from this place.
