I have one- I like it much better than pulling a trailer. I know some people are diehard trailer fans for various reasons but I like the cabover set up. It works for us. It's much easier to manage on small lots (easier to turn around), makes a great billboard, and safer (IMO). Ours have lift gates which are great for getting the machines up and down. You can't load a machine with a driver attached (not good for the guy where every second counts) but for us, it's still good. The good part is at the end of the day you leave it at the shop, jump in your pickup, and go home. If your thinking of giving one a try, go for it.
I have two 1 ton jap cab overs. LOVE THEM!!! Both are made into flatbeds with water tanks and high pressure pumps. We can carry everything for other services we can provide i.e. wheel stops signs, etc. on the back of the truck. Primarily the stripers and Lazy Liners fill the trailers. The trailers allow us to leave the LL's connected to two of the stripers. When we pull up to a job we drive them out, paint then drive them back into the trailer. The box truck was too high to allow driving them in comfortably. Using a lift meant we had to uncouple the riders and load them by hand.
I purchased an 07 Isuzu NPR 22' box truck this past spring. The box is 8' wide 18' flat, and the last 4' is a slanted beaver tail with a typical trailer drop down ramp door. Believe it or not I can carry more equipment in this than my old 16' x 8.5 trailer. I can either push or ride the machines up then secure to side wall with e track and clamps. Plenty of storage on walls for hanging stencils brooms, shelves ect. I also mounted 4 undermount truck boxes for tools: 1 -tools for machine 2- lay out tools, 3- handicap and fire lane sign storage, 4- core drill, hammer drill, cut off saw, sledge hammers ext. I typically carry 2 riders and 4 machines stored perpendicular so starting and stopping is not a strain on straps!! As I posted earlier, although this is 17500 gvw, I have a D.O.T number for crossing state lines and because of that I am under D.O.T regulations.....which I am still learning about ( by the way, I was told ALL commercial trucks over 10 K will need a D.O.T number in the near future!) I like it because of the maneuverability in tight places....construction sites where you would never pull a trailer in.... Here is a link to the truck body mfg. http://www.supremecorp.com/supreme.php?page=product&p… My truck does not have the gate in the rear, just a ramp door. Mike In-Line Wilm, De
Purchased it from DICK GREENFIELD ISUZU in north Jeresy, I am sure that you can purchase the box from a distributer and have it put on your own truck.... They are designed for landscapers... and come in different sizes.... so far it has worked great for me. I do not leave the machines hooked up to the riders while transporting, and if pushing the speeflo 4000s is ok,,, the 6000 or 200s with the 15 gal is can be heavy and usually ride. If you park on a slight down slope pushing is easier. I wonder if this would work as a undermount tank for hauling water http://www.plastic-mart.com/class.php?item=1312 I did find a company to make a custom undermount diamond plate fuel tank with pump but have to look at regulations on hazmat. You may be onto something! I'd consider going back to a box with that set up if I had room to mount a waterblaster and still be able to "take the whole garage" with me to jobsites. We try to do everything in one trip...signs, surfaceprep, wheel stops, etc.
Stripes, You could do like the port-a-john companys do. Mount a 500gallon tank directly behind the cab and then put a flatbed/box with dovetail behind it for machines. You'd loose 48" or so for the tank in the front but thats not too bad. I'm currently looking at the nqr's (class 4 trucks) for my landscape business as my direction has changed a little bit and I need to loose the trailers and go to a truck based operation now too.
