Any one have suggestions with how to store a machine that only uses water borne paint? Is pump protector effective? Usually I just clean out my machine and I think there might be some water in it. Does that matter? I'd like to take whatever steps I can to make sure the machine functions properly for as long as possible.

I don't leave water in my equipment. if I have been using latex I flush the machine out with water and follow that with mineral spirits or paint thinner.

You could also use used motor oil or new motor oil or cooking oil, anything that won't freez and expand and also protects from oxidation.

I understand your concerns asapwasasp but it is really as simple as it sounds. cleaning out well with water, storing with mineral spirits will work very well with the graco and any similar striper. I normally flush my machine twice with water before running mineral spirits thru the pump/lines. cleaning the pickup tube and hose go along way helping with clogs, always strain the paint.

Very good advice but to answer the one question he asked originally: Is pump protector effective ? Yes it does work for short and medium term storage but if I was storing the pumps for many years I would use the cooking oil or mineral spirits method and I also would make sure to drain all the fuel out of the tank and the carb to prevent everything from gumming up.

I suck up 1 quart of motor oil after a thorough rinse. Never any start- up problems in the spring.
