Ok so random question... What if anything do you get from your salesman or paint store managers? I mean, I don't need to be glad handed to buy paint, but I'll admit I want a guy to stop in a few times a month and check in on stock, problems etc...not to mention maybe buy a lunch or two We currently don't have real outgoing sales guys. Haven't seen one all summer, and only may see the other in the store on occasion. I hear from friends of mine back East that their sales guys are always going to bat on pricing, buying lunches, golf games etc... I'm just curious what you guys have.

Where you located Calif Striper? Santa Ana here... My paint supplier is just fair with me and I really can't ask for more than that...
I deal mostly with Sherwin Williams. I have found that most of the managers are at least trying. Some are more friendly and helpful than others. My salesman was recently promoted and moved to another district. He was pretty good about going to bat for us on at least some of the price increases, but was sometimes limited by what upper management would let him do. Have not yet met the new guy. I have been passed several contacts and leads that have resulted in some very nice jobs. Was even passed a nice lead last week that may result in several thousand $ of work. Before the economy went loony, they would occasionally give us hats or t-shirts for our whole crew. Salesman bought lunch a couple of times. They also used to have contractor events with lunch and some door prize give aways a couple times a year. That seems to have stopped 2 - 3 years ago. Sherwin has also not been having their hospitality night at the Expo. Also, with the economy, I think they (like many other companies) have reduced staff at many of the stores and some of the managers are feeling the stress. I also know that the higher the volume you spend, the more attention you are likely to receive; not just at Sherwin Williams.
I dunno about volume getting you any play with 'em. We buy paint and thermo from SW by the semi load. I struggle to get the local dealer to keep the tips and blue/red paint that I need on hand, probably in part because we buy in bulk and it doesn't go through his store. When I ask why he doesn't have the common tip sizes I need he says because I never buy them from him, to which I reply I can't buy what you dont' stock. The commercial store that HE gets his supply from is only 45 miles away so I have pretty much given up and just go straight to the warehouse and get it there. Now there is a SW store in OKC that bends over backwards for us, Chris and Megan will go out of their way to get me any materials and paperwork related to the materials that I might need. So yeah, it's really all about the manager and how motivated he/she is to go to bat for you.
Funny Story... Thursday night I posted my original comment, Friday afternoon I get a call from a paving company who was referred to me from Sherwin Williams. Going to price out the work on Monday for these guys. So I guess I can add treat me fairly, and job referrals. Also I had an epoxy job where they sold me the wrong hardner and this stuff would go off in 10 min. I had the job shot blasted and had to make sure it got done with in the time frame we had. Obviously I could not spray it so I called in the cavalry and had to tape and roll the whole job. I went in the following business day explained everything to him and the paint pros at Sherwin Williams picked up 55% of the paint tab for that job. I had over 4000 linear feet to stripe and anyone who has done epoxy work knows that the stuff is not cheap. On the whole I am very happy with SW. I have been tempted by some Vista Paint products but another local striper I know told me the Vista products are crap... I will try this oil infused latex paint from Vista for my next warehouse job though.

I spent over 200k on paint last year, no one took me hunting, didn't even get a fake deer head.
Speaking as a salesman for a smaller distributor, I always make sure to visit my customers at least 2 to 3 times a year. Sometimes that will include a lunch or just a handshake and some chit chat. I usually send e-mails or call them two to three times a month just to make sure they are doing ok and to get more orders. Since SW is such a large company then I'm sure they can't give the attention that the smaller companies can. But I have also noticed that a lot of SW customers are hesitant to try new paint and will continue to buy from them dealing with price increases and bad customer service.
