Hey fellas, i am trying to put together a price list for a contractor that does both parking lot work and road work... The parking lot price list is not a problem, but the road side i am not sure about... Can anyone steer me towards a reasonable minimum job fee for road work... I know that this can vary quite a bit, but i figure 3 to 4 men on each road job for traffic control and then the common costs; material, mobilization, etc. All road jobs will not exceed 1 mile. I figure 500.00 for minimum job mobilization concerning any roads would be reasonable. Let me know if you guys think this sounds right. Thanks, Ryan

What equipment do you plan to take to the job, do you need a road striper? or would a parking lot unit and a line driver work?, do you have to apply glass beads, are you required to set up full traffic control, or would a stack of regular cones work?. I would be $400-$500 on the low end and $750+ on the high end for a minumum charge. Its all in what you have to bring to the job.
Ryan, I agree with Asphaltman. There are many many variables such as striping the road inside a clossure or if you have to provide traffic control. State, County or city inspector or is it a private job? Asphaltmans price suggestions are in the bal park of what I'd look for as a minimum
Now. I am equipped with 2 3900 graco, 1 5900 w/ Glass Bead Dispenser, and line driver which all can fit on one truck and trailer. Traffic control, proper insurance and workers comp are my biggest unknowns. I have not figured out what the difference in cost will be for the road work... We will mange traffic control and i still have to find out some specs pertaining to barricade size, but i don't think i will have too much trouble since these are small sized jobs. I am going to set my minimum job fee at 675.00. My rate for linear ft of paint w/ glass beads will be b/t .20- .24. and arrows around 35.00. I am not trying to low ball but this is a possible new customer that may lead to a lot of work in the future. I welcome any comments or suggestions. Thanks, Ryan
You have another resource at you disposal - make a trip to the state DOT office and request to see the Bid Tabulations for roadway striping work. The state is required to keep a book of previous bids for all types of highway work and you will be able to see what the going rate for various size jobs is, and might even be broken down into specific localities. It should also be broken down into per item pricing for mobilization, traffic control, per item pricing for all types of marking and removal. Everybody knows what everybody else bid on any given job and can adjust accordingly on the next job. Makes for "competitive" bidding!
I would check and get a quote with a local barricade company, what you can run into is if the job will have an inspector then you may have to have "certified" traffic control, which can include 4x4 signs traffic cones or delineators etc. all that can be very expensive. Now on the flip side if it is some local road or a project that is not that big of deal, then you may be able to just use a stack of 18" cones and have a second guy to drop them as you paint. Also be aware of the fedral crap regulating VOC amount in paints used on roadways. I think it hase to be waterbased with a VOC of 150 or less.
If you have the proper weather , sunny and low humidity I would shoot it with a fast dry such as S/W hotline. We do not cone at all behind our striper because it drys so fast. On a day not so perfect for drying just uae a follow truck to keep traffic off for 3 min. or so. Your 5900 should do fine...
