Hey Guys, I live in a small town, Olive Branch, Mississippi. Population about 30,000. However, it is across the state line from Memphis, TN. Less than a week ago two of our Police officers pulled over a stolen car. When the suspects got out they started shooting. Both officers were shot. One was hit in the chest/bullet proof vest and had a rib fractured. The other one was hit lower and is at the present time paralyzed from the waist down. My question on this matter is this: I want to donate some jobs at no cost to go to the officers relief fund. Has anyone had any experience at doing something like that. I know I will have to put a dollar limit/ size on the jobs so that I can continue doing other jobs. Any suggestions or cautions would be appreciated. Thanks, Rock

I have never done anything like that before so I don't have any suggestions but I did want to say thank you for doing such a good deed, we could use more people like you in the world. I really applaud your generosity! I would definitely be interested in how to go about doing something like this as well, I will be watching the posts for suggestions.
You're not really talking about donating jobs at no charge if I understand but charging normal customers then donating the money to the fund (I doubt police officers need free striping)? In that case if this is big news I would immediately put it on my web site, in ads or on bid (and call back bids that haven't said OK yet ) and say BOLDLY that due to this tragedy X% of this job will be donated to the official relief fund. You can do a very good deed and get some good PR (never bad) with a picture in the paper presenting a check to the head of the fund if it turns out to be fairly substantial. If I understood wrong tell me what you are considering doing.
Don, I am charging normal pricing and having the customer make the check out to Officer Mark Ayers relief fund. I am also suggesting that they can add more money to the check if they wish to. I also explain how it is a Win-Win situation since they are donating the money to a good cause and getting their lot striped for free. I'm not sure it would be tax deductible, but I'll find out and they it will make it a BIG Win-Win.
If the fund was set up right it could be tax deductible but these funds are often set up quickly so they are probably not. It is a win-win and you are doing a great thing but don't feel bad about letting the public know. Collect those checks & hold on to them, then get the newspaper to take a photo of you presenting a good-size dollar amount of the checks you "raised" by donating your services to the head of the fund (or any legitimate representative) along with anything else that might apply like your company has already donated X $ from jobs you began doing immediately to help this fund AND the fact you had customers make checks out directly to the fund so you were donating all the materials & labor to raise this money as "your part". You will get a few nice quotes in the paper about "it was the least we could do to help in this tragedy" or whatever and the underlying publicity/public relations will be worth many-many more times than any ad you could ever buy. Don't worry, unless you say something really dumb it won't seem like you are doing it for publicity BUT doing noble things to benefit your community is a great company image builder, something a lot of companies don't do, and an opportunity that you shouldn't miss.
Great Idea Rock and in addition to praying for those officers and their families, I will be praying for your success. I suggest you try the "walk for life" model - perhaps donate your effort to one of the officers church and PUBLICIZE so lots of folks donate a per foot amount. Get a local bank to set up the fund and get the word out - it's news. Keep me posted on how it does and where to donate. Good luck and God Bless!
