Am fortunate in that i have found three in the last year. Two are x- military and the third is supposedly LD however have not found out in what respect as he is able to understand and do all aspects of the work that I have requested of him. Productivity is up to say the least. It did take several years and more people going through the company than i really wanted. Bob
My main guy will be 60 next August. I promised him his own Linedriver for his 60th birthday. He's a former landscape foreman, who wanted to get out of the Texas heat. Prefers working nights and also enjoys the fact that I speak fluent english(unlike his former co-workers). He's single, his kid is grown and he has minimal living expenses. I even hooked him up with my neighbor, who owns a landscape company, so he can make extra money when he wants to. He helps me with striping and runs my pressure washing crew a couple nights a week. Couldn't ask for a better guy! Wish I had 3 or 4 more just like him.
Just an FYI there is a magazine called "Construction Business Owner" (another freebie) for all types construction, not just pavement. But once in a while it has a good article. This month they have a long piece on the immigration/amnesty/illegal alien/guest worker issues and it's REALLY surprising what the statistics show (the "only people that will work construction are Mexicans" is a myth) and it's amazing who stands on which side of these issues. Some powerful "lobbies" and political factions you would assume are on one side are on the other for their own self-serving reasons. Not taking sides or starting an argument here...just amazed me where some of the big unions & political organizations stood on the "border issue" and makes it clear why congress can't make any decisions (there is big money you would never imagine on both sides, often not the side I would think).
I have had mixed results just like the rest of you. If you find good help. Hold onto them. I treat my good employees great. But not enough to give them the impression im a push over. They get decent hourly wage. In addition, I give out performance bonuses. 50-100 if they work hard and do a great job. I have gone through many people. I mostly have part time workers who have regular jobs and look for extra money. Older mature people are your best bet. I just keep looking for the perfect employee. They are not out there so I take what I can get. Jon
