Ladies and Gentleman, I belong to an organization here on the west coast who's members are employed by local governments in the maintenance and installation of traffic controls. We're toying with the idea of putting on a Signs and Markings Rodeo. Can any of you offer any suggestions as to what competitions could be used? Any and all ideas related to this are welcomed.

straightline, Thanks for your reply. I know some of those were in jest. I especially like the Lazy Liner jousting . Line marking races might work. They could see who could paint a disabled hashed area the fastest. 20 foot straight lines could also work. A curved line or circle also. Girl watching won't work, we've had sexual harassment training on the left coast. Of course, a bury your boss contest may be popular . Seriously, if anyone has any more ideas, please feel free to throw them out there.

I've really enjoyed reading the replies, but com'on, I'm really serious. Although, pimped out Line Drivers would be cool. I'm surprised no one has mentioned shovel leaning (style points).

find a blank parking lot and have them design and spray a lot with out any plans. you could judge it on the most efficient way it was designed give points for innovation ideas on methods used to reduce the amount of time spent on the whole project, neatness. Include numbering and stencilling etc. See if they keep running backwards and forwards to the truck for stencils or if they take the whole lot over and save time. look for over spray, drips evenness etc. That sort of thing. You could take a film test and see if they are putting down the right amount of microns etc. Include arrows and crosswalks crosshatching.

Most anything can be made into a competition. Cone tossing is good, see who can toss the largest stack the furtherest. Sign post cutting, who can cut a sign post the fastest with a hack saw.

Big stacks of cones can get pretty heavy. We don't want to get anybody hurt. That goes for the Scottish sign post tossing also. Cones could be thrown singley at a target area. the most standing in the target wins. Just thought of something, Lazy Liner drag races. I thought for sure that Ken would have some ideas. Hey Ken, any ideas or are you just taking this all in to use for the next stripers jamboree?

Straightline, I also like the sign post cutting. Each contestant could be supplied with the same type hacksaw and extra blades. Thanks! Wend, I wish we could find a big enough piece of asphalt somewhere. Your suggestion would be good as a test for employment. Thank you too!

Keep in mind guys he said GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES. Therefore any competition involving speed or efficiency is out of the question. Also it would have to be TEAM competition, since it takes three of them to do the job of one average worker. Maybe a relay where one is working and the other two stand and watch....Just kidding ...Anyway, One of our favorite activities (while waiting for paint to dry) is to stack five or six cones and stand 15+ feet away. Then toss single cones and try to add to the stack without knocking it over. I also like tossing single cones to the next row of parking and trying to get then centered and most importantly standing upright. You should see the look on the cigarette smokin fry-cook's face when you do this successfully!
