Painted the local hospital's helipad yesterday. Went over the blue prints with the guy that hired me. All they wanted was a 1 foot wide outline of the 54 foot hectagon shaped pad, a 3inch out line of a 30 x 30 cross, and a ten foot tall "H" in the middle. I had just finished up and was loading my equipment when the project manager came up and told me that the hospital had decided that they now want the inside of the cross painted white, and he wanted it finished that day so he could turn the helipad over to the hospital. I had another job already lined up for the afternoon. I was afraid if I tried to tape off what I had just painted in the morning it would pull off fresh paint. So I spent the next three hours, on my hand and knees, with a paint brush around the edges and a roller for the middle. My question is....do you guys charge extra for last minute changes such as this? They know there will be an added cost because of more painting.

As with the above posts, charge them with out a doubt. We make good money on change orders, more so with custom work like you were doing. One thing I have learned, when we are approached by the general or who ever for a change order, while on site, I will go figure the price and show them first, so that there is no sticker shock with the changes when we bill them. You would be surprised how many people get sticker shock, it's easy for them to make changes, "add this", "black out this", "move those handi's" etc, but when you bill them a few hundred more, some just don't understand, so its good to show them first, and besides it's not like they are going to say no, and go hire another contractor, the chances are slim...
