Yes, their alkyd is terrible - does not cover well and has 2 feet of atomizing mist (I love that term Ross) otherwise known as overspray. Their CR is very temperature sensitive. At 65 deg it sprays a 2 inch width line and at 85 degrees it sprays a 4 inch line. I am struggling through 400 remaining gallons of the CR but when that is gone, I'll just stick with good old SW where I am paying about $1.75 more per gallon but every new batch is the same as the last and I can spray it from 20 deg to 100 deg with no change in it's ability to spray correctly. For $1.75 per gallon cheaper, I had to give ICI (Aexcel) a try and I think using around 600 - 700 gallons of it is giving it a good objective try.
Randy I have problems with Dulux over here as well, with the exact same results your having. Especially with their yellow. I only use it in emergency if we run out of paint and need to rush down the local ici trade center. The yellow is absolute bollox to spray stencils and it very hard to get it to optimize and have a consistent spray pattern when using it to line mark. I think since they removed the lead from the paint they have never got the formula right.
Well Wendy, with the CR, it is possible to thin it a bit to get it to spray in cooler temps but the problem is you might have to thin it in the early morning or at night then during the day it might get to 85 deg and if you still have a bucket of paint on from the night before, it is now spraying a 5 inch wide line - - it is just a pain in the (expletive) to deal with an not worth the $1.75/gallon savings. On jobs where you might work around the clock and spray 350 gallons, the little quirks just slow us down too much and cause to many varaibles which unless you have all very experienced operators, is reflected in appearance and quality. I have NEVER had to keep 4 series and 3 series tips with me to account for temperature changes but with ICI (Aexcel) Chlorinated Rubber, I have to frequently change tips because the paint is changing viscosity with the change in temperature.
We use ICI (aexcell) water based almost exclusively, and love it. It is not ICI's own paint it is Axcell. We first used Axcell a few years back when LaFarge was ending operations and they started distributing it until they ended their operations.
I just bought 3 pallets of white yellow and blue CR. It is cheaper than SW but not worth the extra effort to get it to go thru the machine. Even when it is thin enough to atomize, I still don't like the stripe it makes. Guess I've got to keep paying the piper (SW) until I find some decent paint at a reasonable price.
I have used ICI for 8-9 years and I love it, I use the ICI quick dry paint which is thicker and dries much faster, the regular is a little weak and in cool temps or shade can take what seems like an eternity to dry. I also use SW hotline but it clogs up my machines so often that I dont use it that much.
Ken, I am glad that I am not the only one having problems with the ICI paint - - I do love the coverage their CR gives but I absolutely HATE the spray pattern. I have tried different tips, pressure, thinning the paint and everything I have tried has yielded marginal results of improvement at best. Then top it off with fluctuations in temp we experience year round here in the North it is not someone I would have any employee try to figure out. The factory (Aexcel) said that I am the only one that is having problems with their CR spraying correctly - - I didn't believe it for a minute. Same as you, the price savings is hardly worth the aggravation - - I'll pay more at Sherwin Williams and keep getting a consistently better product.
Thank you Ken, That video certainly makes you look twice. Wild, huh? The spreadsheet was helpful also. I tend to go overboard with excel spreadsheets so I just love this. Because of the colors you don't have to waste time reading column headings. Now the hard part filling in the blanks.
I have noticed that everyone has mixed reviews when it comes to ICI paints. I have been using ICI for 3 years now without any problems. I only used the CR 1 time tho. The reason that I switched was: SW $74.00 per 5gal ICI was $39. I raised (expletive) with SW but no luck. What are some of you paying for SW compared to what I was paying? Oil or water based.
