Standing still here up north. Canada Due to winter it will be the same until mid of April. We did our first job last year early May. Hoping that this year it will jump start a bit quicker, as we made some contact with realestat company and the government(public works) last summer. GOOD GOD this winter is soooooooo long!
The Harbor Freight engine I have is 2 years old and runs a touch better than the Honda's. I found the mounting holes to be all the same for my application, but do not recall if I compared all of the mounting holes. Your Harbor Freight store should be able to order in the 6.5hp model for you. Around here they are going for $130. I have also been having real good luck with the newer Briggs engines. I bought 2 for $190 each. The briggs at lower rpms are much cheaper on fuel. Just noticed SKIMIKE's post down the page and realized I forgot to mention the Briggs engines are electric start. That was the big reason for going with them.

Gentlemen, I have some questions on swapping engines on the stripers. I recently had an engine die on an older model graco 3500. Q 1. Have any of you swapped the engines on these machines? Q 2. Did you go with a Honda engine or a Chinese knockoff? Q 3. Did the Chinese engine mate up well and work as well? Q 4. Where did you buy your Chinese engine or do you know of a supplier for those engines. (My local harbor freight is now only carrying 13HP) Thanks in advance, Domingo Tractor Supply should have their engines on the shelf by now....
do a google search for small engines or lawnmower engines, tou will find sites that have hundreds of different models at wholesale prices, I recently got a 6.5 briggs ohv ele start for 230 and it only took 5 days to get. when my motor gets bad on my ll Im going to go on one of those sites and get a high performance go cart model honda. whoo hoo. Ill have the fastest ll this side of the miss.lol (j/k)
Before you buy any replacement engine please take note that the engine on any gas sprayer has an extra coil in it to energize the control box. These engines do cost a little more than the ones everyone advertises.Without the extra charging coil you sprayer would only sit there and look pretty.I have had the pleasure of telling a customer who bought and paid a small engine shop good money for installing the wrong motor!(He bought it from them because my motor price was to high. And then he brings it to me because the clutch wouldn't work!)
One Briggs is on a 3900/3 gas powered house painter that was mounted to a Titan frame and is working well (had the frame - bought the house painter for $150 with a bad engine - it was a slow winter). The other Briggs is on a walk behind saw, and the Harbor Freight 6.5hp is on a conventional striper (an old Kelley). Yes the Harbor Freight runs better than the Honda's I have on other machines, but in all fairness the Honda's (at least 2 of them) are about a year older (others are much older).
Seems to me years ago Jpanz posted some requirements needed to bolt the Graco pump assembly to a Honda or Honda Clone. If I remember right Graco machined the face plate or had Honda machine the motors for them. Jpanz or Cormac could shed some light on the subject. I do know all Honda motors and Honda clones from 4hp to 6.5 hp have the same mounting bolt hole pattern and the same shaft face plate bolt hole pattern. From there, Honda goes to 8hp to 13hp models with different bolt hole patterns and a 1 inch shaft.
yes but not on a graco it was a ezliner. I got it on line. Its been a while but I just googled small engines and did a search and found a company that has tons of them and all different models and makes
Domingo wrote on Mar 3, 2009:Go to #14SJO & Skimike, did you install those engines on the striping machines (Briggs)? Where did you buy them? SJO, you said that the 6.5 harbor freight engine ran better than a Honda, did you put it on a striper?
I have a honda knock off from harbor freight and it has a smog carb and must be choked to start hot or cold, every time

To answer Domingo's original question, the engines sold by Harbor Freight are manufactured by Lifan, one of the best Chinese engine manufacturer out there. Within the last couple of months because of pressure by Honda I assume, they added an extra screw to the valve cover, and redesigned the gas tank and air filter assemblies. Purely cosmetic. I run 2 Harbor Freight Lifan engines on our mini-bikes and they run strong and are dependable. Footnote: I bought two cheapo Baja minis they sell at Tractor Supply, Murray's or Pep Boys and swapped out the 2.8hp engines for 6.5hp from Harbor Freight.($99 bucks on sale). Darn things will set you right back!!! My grandson (9yrs old) does wheelies!!...LOL..We're having a ball!! He rode it all winter every day in the snow too!! And yes, he Always wears his full face cycle helmet.
