If the paint is cold this will happen. The paint must stay real warm. If not the paint the tip may be bad, Jim

If you are running a ride on attachment, you can set up a harmonic resonance between the two motorspossibly causing the pattern you are describing. The solution to this problem is to raise or lower the rpm on one or the other motors.

I often charge more for restripe.....no kidding.... especially over sealcoat when I have to use water-borne paint. Coming from engineering background, new layout it takes less time than the hassle of moving cars and dealing with multiple layers of property mgt. to do a restripe. The large companies in this area compete for large restripe jobs and do them for almost free. I often see companies from the other side of the metroplex re-striping here in Denton. If we get a restripe at our price, so be it. If we don't, makes no diff. because new construction keeps us busy. I will not bid low just to get the job especially a restripe. Even with this attitude, restripe is 25% our work load. It is easier to let the low-ballers cut their own throats.

I have said this before and I will say it again. I will get out of the business before I do re-striping for the same price as new layout. If your market pricing is so competitive that layout and restripe prices are nearly the same, I hope you pick the easier of the two. Jeeez, I cannot even believe it, no fricken way I am giving the brains end of this trade for the no brainer restripe prices, no way...

see I was talking for more new construction than anything. Last night I got and I must of went through 6 pounds of chalk by popping lines. But the good thing now is when I get there its all ready to go. -Dean

We are able to charge about 50% more for new layout - sometimes more. As for chalk, I bought chalk this past season for my kids to do "art" on my driveway but I never use it for layout - I don't even own a chalkline.

When I started yaers ago, I was told the standard charge for most stripers was double on new layout. That's how I've always done it. Of course a minimum still applies when necessary. Lately I've been adding at least 2 cents a foot on high traffic restripes due to the degree of difficulty. Many times, I have to put a helper "babysitting" the storefronts just to keep people off the paint. I don't worry so much about them tracking the paint. I can clean that up. I just don't want a "slip and fall" or "paint on my carpet" issue.

Double and sometimes more (degree of difficulty...ie if I have to REALLY think) than restripe...plus cleaning and of course signage....oh, and traffic control and mobilization for street work.

Me too! I charge at LEAST double. More if the degree of difficulty is up there. Especially in the fall and early winter months...everyone is desperate to get it done before it gets too cold or snows, so the there is a last minute rush and they are just happy to get the work done...so I charge more. Thats just me. (My min charge goes up at least 25%).

Maybe I should re-evaluate. Just because we can do new construction as fast or faster than restripe, maybe I shouldn't be as forgiving on charging for lay-out..

Ken what color is the sky in your world? You telling me you can layout and stripe 300 spaces faster than you can restripe 300 spaces? I'm pretty sure I can restripe a Wa-Mart before you can get it laid out...

When you say re stripe a wal mart do you mean re-snapping start and stop points? if so then it becomes a matter of just moving a cable and painting to do a layout. I still charge double though

BTS..... You bet. Especially apartment restripes. I am, however, not including lots that are cleared of cars and traffic where we can do the job in one trip. When I factor in "go backs" and dealing with the multi-layers of management inherent to restripes, new construction dollars are better. One "go back" for me costs a minimum of 4 hours lost time here in the metro-mess for a car that is parked on one stripe. That's $500-$1000 worth of work somewhere else. I charge extra for restripe over coal tar sealcoat regardless. Then there are those crazies you have to deal with on restripes that claim you got paint on their car. A few weeks back I had a "lady" want a paint job to fix the rock chips on the front of her Honda SUV. She claimed they weren't there when she parked and assumed it was overspray. Just that cost me $100 for a letter from my attorney. He let her know of the risks of frivolous law suits and eluded to possible charges for extortion. We were not going to pay $2500 for a complete paint job plus car rental she was demanding. Needless to say, haven't heard back from her. And so on..... I'll stick to new construction unless it is a regular GC doing maintenance work. Otherwise, I'll get premium price for restripe.

Stars, I mean re-striping a Wal-Mart. Repainting existing lines. And Ken, I avoid apartments like the plague. Plenty of Office Buildings and Shopping Centers out there. I realize some of you old codgers can't stay up past 9:00pm, but after 10:00PM the codger population goes home to bed and leaves the parking lot empty. Nighttime is the right time. Oh and I would have let her file a claim and let the insurance people deny it....they are more than happy to do that....
