I primarily use water borne paint. I would like to know what advice experienced stripers suggest for pro longing the use of a tip. I've heard you can leave tips soaking in paint thinner or toluene. Would this help when using waterborne?

i use latex more than I would like to. I just clean the tips out when I clean the machine out.

Do you experience wear heavier when using latex? How often would you say you change tips?

we use latex all the time and just let the tip harden and clean out the next day or when we wash out. we have never had an issue. Do you use reverse clean tips? also if you use an extension, you can't leave paint in that. That will have to be cleaned out every day.

When you say reverse clean I'm not sure what you mean. I operate a 4600 self propelled Newstripe. The tip I use is a 619 which is for 4-8 inch lines. I only use water borne paint currently. I hope to switch to oil base soon, but I only have one striper. My concern involves the wear on the tip. How long do tips last for you if you only use waterborne?

50 gallons or so on tips. by reversing the tip he means turning the tip in the tip base to blow out clogs. you can run latex and oil out of the same machine, ive done it for years.

What steps would you take to change over from water to oil base paint to ensure that the machines best interest is at stake?

Just clean out first.

Yes I understand "Clean Out First", But I am asking if there is anything specific you do prior to changing from using water borne to oil based paint?

Take 2 steps forward then 3 steps back, shake it to the left, lift your right leg up and turn around clockwise 3 times.

Okay I did the Hokie Pokie, but I'm still wondering what I need to do to make sure there are no issues when changing from water base to oil base...

That's it, nothing else to do.

Straightline, I think he was inquiring if he needs to change hoses, pick up tube, guns and or filters. So to answer that question I would say at a minimal you should clean out or change out the filters when changing over from oil to latex or vice versa but I have a buddy that changes the hoses everytime he switches over from latex to oil and vice versa. He has a set of pressure hoses for latex and a set of pressure hoses for oil so there won't be any problems switching over after he flushes out the machine and cleans out the filter.

No need to change out all of that, too much work and too much time.

Does water in the system effect the change over from water base to oil? I've heard different things when converting from oil to water to prevent things getting plugged up

The waterbase to oil or vice versa will turn into cottage cheese in the filters

no it wont. you have obviously never done this. mixing oil and chlorinated rubber will do what you are talking about but not oil and latex. I do this ALL the time and I don't remember the last time I changed a filter.

Well it has happen to me in the past and it was a nasty cottage cheese gooey mess up in the filter and filter housing but I guess you know more about what happen to me than me with you being 1900 miles away so I digress FYI: It wasn't traffic paint I was working with but what do I know since I was the only one there cleaning out the machine, so again I digress

answering his question directly you are incorrect. mixing any paint without at least flushing the machine out COULD end up a disaster. his question is...will the water left in the machine effect the oil base paint. im ASSUMING the water is from the cleanout. it will not, but to be on the safe side you COULD flush the water out with thinner then add the paint. its ok to agree to disagree...I do it all the time.
